Climbing at the Kohlesiepen takes place in an abandoned quarry. It is situated very close to Wetterstraße, tight in the heart of the Ruhrgebiet. Thanks to a lot of vegetation, you cannot see it from the street. Right next to the spot, there is a house as well. As this is not an official spot, please be quiet to not disturb the neighbors.
To make one thing clear right from the start. This is not a beginner-friendly spot. Difficulties range from 1 to 9. Even though most of the lines are moderately graded, the belay material is pretty old. Next to some new bolts, you will find old pitons, webbing slings, and other rather dubious belay material. Moreover, the climbs have not seen many ascents, so be beware of loose rocks.
The climbing at Kohlesiepen consists of boulder moves in compact sandstone. In the right part of the wall, you will need your trad gear. As well, there are some climbs with positive inclination. You can collect your first alpine-like experience here by moving fast in positive terrain.
If you are looking for an extension of your climbing day after visiting Kohlesiepen: Avalonia is right around the corner.
